Caribou Grazing in Basecamp Yard
(also known as 'Yardboo'!)

This photo was taken during the deep autumn color change at the Great Canadian Wilderness upper Thelon River Wildlife Basecamp in late August / early September, 1998 by wildlife photographer Galen Rowell. During this period there is typically a lull in the southbound migration of the 300,000 (+/-) strong Beverly Barrenground caribou herd as the cows and bulls meet, spread out and graze on rich lichens and mosses near the tree-line. During this lull the caribou become quite relaxed and are relatively easy to approach for photography. This situation of having 'yardboo' is not at all unusual - sometime they stay for weeks at a time! Musk-oxen also often wander within site of camp as well.

The prime winter pelage of the caribou often seems to blend into the crimson tundra landscape - for example - there are actually five caribou In this photo! The other three can just be made out by the white tails halfway up the ridge (left). Note the photographers set up to the immediate left of the red tent. The hills visible behind camp contain rich bird life, historical encampments, ancient archaeological sites and numerous wolf dens that are often active earlier in the summer months.
