After that amazing day in the café, despite being completely enthralled and enraputured with one another, we chose to deny our attraction instead of nurturing it, thinking that the right thing to do was to try to make our existing relationships work out.

Our attraction was obvious - more to our partners than to us - and at times we were intentionally kept apart by our mates. Over the years we saw each other for a few brief moments in passing. We were always thrilled to see one another, but uneasy jealousy from our partners prompted us to leave possibility of even friendship behind.

However, our connection was strong and the ember between us continued to flicker each time we met. On some level, we knew that connection could have easily and instantly become powerful and exhilarating, had we allowed it to happen. Instead, with quiet resignation of being respectful to our partners, we denied the spark and moved in separate directions.

Not too long ago, we reminisced about this time of our lives after sharing the most delectable bowl of our favourite ice cream. We compared the feeling of being with the wrong person to the feeling after eating a favourite ice cream then having vanilla: once you have a taste of the good stuff, it pretty much spoils you for any other flavour.
