The Invitation
This poem was originally written for a newsletter by Oriah Mountain Dreamer. It soon took a life of it's own, being posted on email, refrigerators, on company bulletin boards all over the world. It has provided insight and soul-warmth to countless people worldwide. However, as can happen, the original poem sometimes was misquoted and mistyped, so that even the smallest changes in words gave each stanza different meanings. I learned of this when I purchased a copy of The Invitation on audio tape, read by Oriah Mountain Dreamer herself. In it, she addresses common mis-quotes in the poem and explains what her original meaning was. I have gone to her website and copied the poem below, as was written by the author. Here it is in it's original form. Enjoy. It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. It doesn't interest me how old you are. It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon... I want to know if you can sit with pain I want to know if you can be with joy It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me
is true. I want to know if you can see Beauty I want to know if you can live with failure It doesn't interest me It doesn't interest me who you know It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom I want to know if you can be alone ~ Oriah Mountain Dreamer About the Author: |
